Jeremiah 15:16…eat these words!

Published on January 22nd, 2013

Jeremiah eat mainI found a verse recently that is interesting, funny, and challenging.

When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.  Jeremiah 15:16

Isn’t that awesome?! Jeremiah is the writer here.  He was a prophet.  He was a prophet that had a hard job.  People didn’t respond that well to him.  He didn’t really have a lot of success.  He even had a nickname – the “weeping prophet.”  He cried…a lot.  He preached God’s message from a broken heart as he witnessed the decline of his people, his friends, and his family toward spiritual irrelevance.  That’s Jeremiah.  And yet we find these words that speak of some hope.  He found himself in a place that when God’s Words came…he ate them up!  This word “ate” is the Hebrew word – AKAL (AW-KAL).  It means “to devour…to consume”  So get this – God’s Words come to Jeremiah and he just consumes them.

And then notice what happened…”they were my joy and my hearts delight.”  In other words, “they made me happy.”  Question:  Do you want to increase the “happy factor” in your life?  Are you grumpy?  Crabby?  God’s Word has the ability to increase our joy and delight.

Chase it.  Embed it.
