Great Leaders Grow

Published on July 25th, 2012

I recently read a book called Great Leaders Grow.  I found it to be interesting, challenging, and helpful.  “Growing for a leader is like oxygen to a deep-sea diver:  without it you die.  Unlike the diver, you may not physically die – but if you stop growing, your influence will erode, and over time, you can even lose the opportunity to lead at all.”

This is a dangerous and scary concept.  Dead leaders don’t work.  Growth is what separates living things from dying things.  Organizations and people that are fully alive – GROW – leaders especially.  I’m not a big fan of acronyms, but this one was memorable and helpful!

G = Gain knowledge
R = Reach out to others
O = Open your world
W = Walk toward wisdom

Your capacity to grow determines your capacity to lead!  It also determines your capacity to move within the organization.  Notice what does not determine your capacity to lead.  It’s not your talent.  It’s not past success.  It’s not what you know.  It’s not even being on the right team.  It’s simply your capacity to grow.
