Enchantment

Published on April 8th, 2011

I just finished reading a book by one of my favorite authors, Guy Kawasaki.  He cracks me up…often.  He also challenges my thinking, stretches what I believe, and motivates me to action.  His newest book is called “Enchantment – The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions.“  Guy breathes buzz.  He’s all energy and passion. Kawasaki is the original Apple evangelist, and in his latest book, he deals with how to become “likable” in your interactions with people.  Here are a few thoughts that are helping me.  I hope they help you too!

#1 Make Crow’s Feet. It’s the first impression you give people.  Smile – a lot.  And then, smile again.  It costs absolutely nothing.   What does it cost you not to smile?  Everything…if it prevents you from connecting with people.  Smiling sends a clear message about your state of mind.  Not smiling creates an opening for many interpretations, including grumpiness, aloofness, and anger.  Smile and create crow’s feet (a big thanks to my son Caden for letting me borrow his beautiful smile for the picture in this post)!

#2:  Accept Others. For people to like you, they have to accept you.  For people to accept you, you have to accept them.  Don’t forget that we all die equal as a lump of tissue, bone, and fluid.  While we’re living, we need to get over ourselves and accept others if we want to enchant people.

#3:  Get Close. The single most important factor in determining whether or not you connect with another person is neither personality nor mutual interests – it is simple proximity.  EBWA (enchant by walking around).
